In search of stability at high speeds and easier turns at low speeds, Yamaha has created a singular riding solution that the company is currently testing in an off-road cycling application. Officially named Yamaha EPS Steering Assist, this lightweight solenoid setup acts as both a lively steering damper and electrical power-assisted steering.

As such, Yamaha’s prototype steering assist system utilises torque-sensing, magnet, and actuator technology, leading to the advantage of a high-speed steering damper and steering assist input at high speeds.

Interestingly, the Japanese company says it's perfected the setup on its e-bike line and is now curious to ascertain if dirt bikes and other motorcycles are suitable for this technology. An Australian rider named Jay Wilson is testing the system on Yamaha’s 250cc and 450cc dirt bikes currently, competing with the All Japan Yamaha Factory Team in both classes.

If we talk about the application of the Yamaha steering damper, it is very similar to the Honda Electronic Steering Damper System (HESD). The increased steering input from the handlebars through the front end of the motorcycle is an added benefit.

When combined with the IMU and advanced software, the steering mechanism can also act as a self-balancing apparatus and even provide steering movements for autonomous driving (think: parking assist). It will be fascinating to see how far the Yamaha EPS Steering Assist System will come in its advancement and when we might start seeing it on production machines.
