Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge Are Getting New Names

Volvo has recently renamed its electric vehicles (EVs) to align with its latest EV lineup including models like the EX30 and EM90. With this change, model names should become more consistent making it simpler for consumers to distinguish between electric and hybrid vehicles. Presently, Volvo provides the EX40 and EC40 EVs in India.

Renaming of XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge have been rebranded as the EX40 and EC40, respectively. Volvo has completely dropped the 'Recharge' suffix from its global lineup of EVs. As part of its plan to become a totally electric vehicle manufacturer by 2030, Volvo is rebranding itself. The renaming and rebranding for the two EVs are likely to be implemented on the India-spec models soon.

With their new names, the EX40 and EC40 now more closely match the rest of Volvo's completely electric lineup, which also includes the EX30, EX90, and EM90. This change makes the EX40 easier to identify from the XC40, which is still known by its previous moniker but is powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE). Customers find it simpler to distinguish between hybrid and electric vehicles. These days, even the plug-in hybrid versions of its cars are only identified by the suffixes "T6" or "T8," which stand for varying power output levels.

Contradiction with Earlier Plans

Earlier reports suggested that Volvo planned to switch from its current numeric or alphanumeric nomenclature to more conventional names for its new EVs. However, this change did not materialize, and Volvo continues to use alphanumeric names like the EX30 and EX90 for its EVs. The new Volvo Cars CEO, Jim Rowan, decided to maintain the current naming strategy for EVs to maintain brand familiarity.

Volvo’s EV Presence in India

In India, Volvo currently has two EVs on sale, the now “renamed” EX40 and EC40, and recently completed the rollout of the 10,000th locally assembled EX40. The brand-new EX90 flagship and the brand-new EX30 entry-level electric SUV are anticipated to arrive in India shortly from the Swedish automaker.
