Toyota Builds Special Land Cruiser for the United Nations

Toyota has revealed a specially designed Land Cruiser tailored for use by the United Nations (UN). The UN is a significant user of Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs worldwide employing various versions of the SUV including the civilian LC200, the LC300, and their specially modified counterparts. Additionally, it utilizes the traditional LC70 range of SUVs in different body styles.

The new Land Cruiser GDJ76 is based on the recently updated Land Cruiser 70 SUV and was prepared by Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings (TGS), which specializes in customized SUVs for special operations. The GDJ76 is set to replace the popular Land Cruiser HZJ76, which is based on the pre-facelift LC70.

Toyota Land Cruiser GDJ76: A Back-to-Basics SUV

The Land Cruiser GDJ76 is essentially a no-frills version of the already utilitarian Land Cruiser 70. It adheres to the formula of a dependable, traditional ladder frame-based SUV with proper four-wheel drive capabilities and sturdy steel wheels.

While it does offer some creature comforts such as power steering, air conditioning, and the option for heated and powered windows, the Land Cruiser GDJ76 remains a rugged workhorse at heart and it is designed with practicality and purpose in mind rather than luxury or entertainment features.

In terms of appearance, the Land Cruiser GDJ76 closely resembles the recently unveiled Land Cruiser 70. Under the hood, the GDJ76 is equipped with Toyota's proven and tested 2.8-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine known as the GD6, which is the same powerplant used in the Fortuner SUV and this engine produces 201 horsepower and comes with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota claims that this engine is 30 percent more fuel-efficient than the inline-six diesel used in the outgoing specially purposed Land Cruiser HZJ6.

The Land Cruiser GDJ76 is not intended for sale to individual customers; instead, it will be provided in bulk quantities to humanitarian agencies. TGS can customize the cabins of these vehicles based on the specific orders received. Additionally, there is an option for a made-to-order bulletproof variant if necessary.

Individual customers interested in a Land Cruiser 70 can choose models that offer more creature comforts, and these are available for sale in various markets overseas.
