According to the reports, a new 108MP 1/1.33-inch ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor with a resolution of 12032×9024 pixels has been recently revealed by Samsung. Since the sensor has entered mass production, the reports suggest that Xiaomi will be the first-ever company to use it.
In addition to this, the brand is also planning on launching four new smartphones that will feature the same 108MP rear camera architecture mated to a Bright HMX image sensor.
The brand has added support in MIUI’s Mi gallery application for viewing 108MP photos while the reports suggest that the support has been specifically added for 4 devices that have been codenamed by the brand as “Tucana“, “Draco“, “Umi” and “Cmi“.

The four devices have been specifically developed under the Xiaomi brand though the officials can further split them under Mi and Redmi brand. Xiaomi is likely to equip the smartphones with the same Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor since there is no competitive sensor like this made by any other brand.
The 1/1.33-inch sensor with HMX that has been developed by Samsung absorbs more light during low light conditions, which is usually not possible with a smaller sensor. The brand has equipped the sensors with pixel-merging Tetra cell technology that allows them to generate 27MP images by acting as larger sensors. The darker setting allows the sensors to use high ISO which results in less noise and more clear images.
The reports also suggest that the upcoming Mi Mix 4 will not be one of the four smartphones to be equipped with HMX sensor. The official trailer of the Mi Mix 4 does confirm a 108MP primary camera though there is no confirmation whether it features the HMX sensor or not.
