MG has revealed an electric car in China, ahead of its Australian launch early next year. People in China know the electric vehicle as Mulan, named after the well-known folk heroine but globally it most likely is going to take the name MG 4.

The new MG electric crossover compares favourably to the Nissan Leaf, and the expected GWM Ora Good Cat compact car. Contrary to previous rumours, the new Mulan/MG 4 features a huge panoramic sunroof, LED headlights and taillights, a dynamic rear spoiler, and black contrast pieces, drawing aesthetic inspiration from the Cyberster Roadster concept but not its moniker.

According to Chinese media sources, MG has developed the Mulan/MG 4 on a novel 'Nebula' platform created specifically for electric vehicles, with a small 'LBS' lithium battery pack hidden beneath the car's floor. The new platform is rear-wheel drive on some or all models and will supposedly be capable of a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of fewer than 4.0 seconds.

At launch, a 'ternary lithium' battery pack supplied by a Chinese manufacturer will power a single 150kW electric motor on the rear axle. We expect a more powerful dual-motor drivetrain to deliver the headline 0 to 100 km/h time in under four seconds.

The rear suspension will be multi-link independent, with huge circa-18-inch alloy wheels and orange brake callipers. Details regarding the interior of the Mulan/MG 4 are unknown yet, but spy shots suggest a tablet-style infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument panel, and leather sports seats.

More information on the 2023 MG 4 (Mulan) will follow in the coming weeks, either in China or in Europe. Pricing for any market has yet to be confirmed; MG presently sells the ZS EV in India. Despite a single offering that isn't in the entry price range, the automaker recorded 2.8k units sold in India through 2021. Positive sales of the ZS EV might just bring Mulan to India but under a different name.
