MG Motor is set to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio with the introduction of a new model potentially named the MG Excelor EV. With the success of the Comet EV and MG ZS EV, electric vehicles now account for approximately one-third of MG Motor's total sales, establishing MG as the second highest-selling EV brand in India.
Trademarking the Excelor EV Name
Recently, MG Motor trademarked the name 'Excelor EV,' sparking speculation about its upcoming launch in 2024. While the name does not correspond to any existing British aircraft, a tradition MG usually follows for its vehicle names, the trademark status of 'Accepted and Advertised' suggests a strong likelihood of its use for a forthcoming product. Additionally, a logo for the Excelor EV has also been trademarked.
Potential Origins of the Excelor EV
As of now, MG Motor does not have any products with the Excelor name in its global portfolio. Given the relatively low sales volumes of EVs in India, it is improbable that MG Motor will introduce an entirely new product. Instead, the Excelor EV is likely to be a rebadged version of an existing MG electric car sold in international markets. MG showcased several global models, including the MG eHS SUV, eMG6 hybrid sedan, Marvel R, and MG eRX5 SUV, at the 2023 Auto Expo. One of these models could be rebranded as the Excelor EV for the Indian market.
Speculations on Excelor EV Specifications
Details about the Excelor EV, including its body style, dimensions, and target market segment, remain undisclosed. MG Motor already has offerings in the entry-level EV segment with the Comet EV and in the compact electric SUV segment with the MG ZS EV. It is possible that the Excelor EV could be positioned as a mid-size electric SUV to compete with upcoming models like the XUV700 EV and Harrier EV.
MG Motor's Strategic Moves
With the introduction of new products like the Excelor EV, MG Motor aims to strengthen its presence in the Indian market. The company's recent partnership with JSW which acquired a 35% stake in MG Motor India, highlights its commitment to expanding its EV lineup and capturing a larger share of the growing electric vehicle market in India.
