Mercedes-Benz India has introduced an AI-assisted vehicle inspection scanner at a workshop in Mumbai. The system uses 13 cameras and LiDAR to capture around 150 images in approximately three to five seconds as a vehicle passes through the inspection structure.

The imagery covers visible exterior surfaces, the underbody, windscreen and tyres. Cloud-assisted analysis can help flag areas that require attention, giving service advisers and technicians a more consistent visual record at vehicle intake.

What the scanner does

The system automates a time-consuming part of the inspection process: documenting a car from many angles at the start of a workshop visit. A dense image set can make existing marks easier to record and can support comparison when the vehicle is returned.

LiDAR adds depth information to the camera data, while the underbody view gives the system access to areas that are difficult to capture in a conventional walk-around.

AI-assisted does not mean autonomous repair

The scanner should not be described as replacing workshop technicians. It captures and analyses visible condition; trained staff still need to interpret the information, confirm faults, recommend work and perform repairs.

That distinction is important because not every mechanical or electronic issue is externally visible. Diagnostic tools, road tests and hands-on checks remain part of a complete service assessment.

Why standardised intake matters

A repeatable scan can improve transparency for both the workshop and the customer. It creates a timestamped visual baseline, reduces variation between manual inspections and helps advisers explain visible findings with supporting imagery.

The Mumbai deployment also shows how service technology is becoming a differentiator in premium-car ownership. The value will depend on accuracy, appropriate human review and how clearly results are communicated to customers.

The headline number is speed—roughly 150 images in only a few seconds—but the more important benefit is a structured, auditable intake process.
