Isuzu D-Max EV Concept: Setting the Stage for Hilux EV Rivalry

Isuzu has taken a major step towards electrification by unveiling its first electric vehicle, the D-Max EV concept. This all-electric pick-up is set to make its debut in European markets, including Norway and the UK in 2025 with further launches planned for Australia, Thailand, and other regions. The global debut of the production version, referred to as the D-Max BEV, is scheduled for the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show.

Powertrain and Performance

The D-Max EV is powered by a 66.9kWh battery pack, which drives a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup. This electric powertrain delivers a total output of 177hp and 325Nm, slightly surpassing the performance of the current diesel model available in India. However, Isuzu has not yet disclosed the range of the vehicle. For context, similar-sized EVs like the BYD Seal Dynamic and Hyundai's Ioniq 5 offer ranges of 510km (NEDC) and 631km (ARAI), respectively, with comparable battery sizes.

Practicality and Capability

The D-Max EV maintains the practicality and capability expected from a pick-up, with a 1-tonne payload capacity and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity. These specifications ensure that the electric D-Max can serve as a competent commercial vehicle in various markets.

The Indian Perspective

In India, the Isuzu D-Max is available in both Hi-Lander and V-Cross forms, powered by a 163hp, 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine. The D-Max competes directly with the Toyota Hilux in the Indian market. Toyota has also showcased an electric concept of the Hilux, which is expected to share technology with other vehicles built on the IMV platform such as the Innova Crysta and Fortuner.

The Isuzu D-Max EV concept marks an important milestone in the evolution of electric pick-up trucks. With its blend of performance, practicality, and off-road capability the D-Max EV is poised to be a compelling option for both commercial and personal use. As the electric vehicle market continues to expand, the arrival of electric pick-ups like the D-Max EV and Toyota Hilux BEV will further diversify the choices available to consumers.
