India’s passenger-vehicle market opened FY27 at a record pace. Industry wholesale volumes reached 12,73,811 units in April–June 2026, up 25.9% year on year, according to SIAM figures reported by Autocar Professional. The headline is important, but the mix is the bigger story: utility vehicles supplied roughly two-thirds of the quarter’s volume.
India PV sales in Q1 FY27: the key numbers
Total passenger vehicles: 12,73,811 units, up 25.9% year on year.
Utility vehicles: 8,61,918 units, up 28.6%.
Passenger cars: 3,67,549 units, up 21.3%.
Vans: 44,344 units, up 14.8%.
June 2026: 3,88,144 passenger vehicles, up 24.1%.
Utility vehicles are carrying the market
At 8,61,918 units, utility vehicles accounted for about 67.7% of the Q1 total (calculated from the reported segment and overall volumes). That is why a record quarterly total should not be read simply as a broad, uniform revival across every body style. SUVs and crossovers are expanding faster than the overall market and faster than conventional passenger cars, continuing a shift that has shaped product planning, factory allocation and dealer stock decisions for several years.
For buyers, that mix matters because it influences where manufacturers put new powertrains, features and variants first. For carmakers, it changes the economics of launches: a healthy UV share can support higher transaction values, but it also raises the importance of keeping entry-level cars relevant rather than treating the quarter’s total as proof that every sub-segment is equally strong.
Segment-wise view
| Segment | Q1 FY27 volume | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger vehicles | 12,73,811 | +25.9% |
| Utility vehicles | 8,61,918 | +28.6% |
| Passenger cars | 3,67,549 | +21.3% |
| Vans | 44,344 | +14.8% |
All three reported categories grew, which is encouraging. Yet the gap in growth rates is revealing: utility vehicles added volume more quickly than passenger cars and vans. The numbers therefore describe both a larger market and a market whose centre of gravity is moving further toward SUVs.
June momentum and a record for exports
The June tally of 3,88,144 passenger vehicles, up 24.1% from a year earlier, gave the quarter a firm finish. The same report says passenger-vehicle exports reached a Q1 record of about 2.22 lakh units, up 8.8%. Domestic wholesales and exports are different measures, so they should not be combined to estimate retail demand. Together, however, they point to a stronger opening quarter for Indian vehicle manufacturing and overseas dispatches.
What the record does—and does not—tell us
These are industry dispatch figures, not a direct count of registrations or every buyer delivery. They are useful for judging manufacturer-to-dealer momentum and production demand, but they do not by themselves show inventory levels, discounting, city-wise demand or the performance of an individual brand. A strong aggregate quarter can still contain very different outcomes across OEMs, price bands and fuel types.
It is also too early to treat one quarter as a full-year forecast. Festival-season demand, interest rates, supply availability, fuel prices and the timing of model updates can all reshape subsequent months. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: India began FY27 with a record PV quarter, and utility vehicles were the principal engine of that growth.
