Honda City Hybrid Limited to Top-spec ZX Trim Only

Honda has made a significant update to its City hybrid lineup, now offering the model exclusively in the top-spec ZX trim. This decision comes as a shift from the previous availability of two trims V and ZX. The City eHEV, known for its strong hybrid technology, was initially launched in May 2022. However, due to its premium pricing compared to the regular petrol City, sales have been modest, with around 350 units sold per month and a total of approximately 2,000 units sold to date.

City Hybrid Now Available Only in Top-Spec ZX Trim

Honda has decided to sell the City hybrid in a single fully loaded ZX trim, priced at Rs 20.55 lakh (ex-showroom). This trim comes fully equipped with advanced features, including the Honda Sensing ADAS Suite which comprises adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking. Safety features are further enhanced with six airbags, ORVM-mounted lane-watch cameras, a multi-angle rear-view camera, tyre pressure monitoring system (TMPS), vehicle stability assist, hill-start assist, and ISOFIX-compatible rear seats. Additionally, Honda has added a seatbelt reminder chime for all five passengers.

City Hybrid Powertrain and Fuel Efficiency

The City hybrid features a unique bonnett Cycle 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. These motors serve different purposes with one acting as an electric generator and the other as a propulsion unit. The powertrain, coupled with an eCVT gearbox, delivers a claimed fuel economy figure of 27.13 kilometers per liter. In order to maximize performance and efficiency, it smoothly switches between full EV, hybrid, and engine modes while producing 126 horsepower and 253 Newton-meters of torque.

Honda's Sales Strategy and Market Position

Honda's decision to offer the City hybrid only in the top-spec ZX trim reflects a strategic move to focus on the premium segment of the market. The City Hybrid continues to be a unique product in its class appealing to buyers demanding cutting-edge hybrid technology, a high degree of features, and safety despite the premium price and low sales volume.

The Honda City hybrid, now available only in the top-spec ZX trim, continues to be a niche offering in the market. A select group of buyers searching for a high-end hybrid sedan are drawn to it because of its robust hybrid technology, advanced features, and excellent fuel economy. Honda made a strategic move to provide its customers with a product that is more feature-rich and focused which is the reason for streamlining the trim selections.
