Bajaj recently debuted the BS6 version of their 200cc naked street bike, the Pulsar NS200, which only received engine improvements. In contrast, its direct competitor, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, underwent a significant overhaul last year, going beyond just engine enhancements. Now that both bikes have transitioned to the BS6 era, let's evaluate which one offers better value for money on paper.

Design and Features

With their low-slung headlamp, contoured fuel tank, sharp extensions, and sleek tail section, both motorcycles have a dynamic, sporty appearance. However, the design of the NS200 has remained largely unchanged since its inception, feeling somewhat dated compared to the more modern appeal of the Apache, which received a radical front fascia update last year.

With its full-LED headlamp, LED tail lamp, and LCD instrument cluster that shows a range of information including Bluetooth connectivity for smartphone pairing, the Apache leads the pack in terms of features. With the BS6 update, TVS introduced Glide Through Technology (GTT) in the Apache, facilitating easier slow-speed riding through traffic. On the other hand, the Pulsar retains a conventional headlamp and a semi-digital instrument cluster.

The Pulsar NS200 shines in the engine department compared to the Apache RTR 200. Both bikes are equipped with a 200cc, four-valve, single-cylinder motor with fuel injection for BS6 compliance. However, the Pulsar powerplant boasts liquid-cooling, a higher compression ratio, and delivers more power at 24.2bhp and 18.5Nm, surpassing the Apache's output of 20.2bhp and 16.8Nm. However, the Apache offers an advantage with its transmission system, featuring a five-speed gearbox paired with a slipper clutch, while the Pulsar employs a standard clutch despite having extra gear.

Cycle Parts

Both bikes share common hardware, riding on 17-inch wheels with telescopic forks at the front and a mono-shock at the rear. The Pulsar features a perimeter frame, while the Apache utilizes a double cradle chassis, making the former slightly better in handling. Both bikes come equipped with disc brakes at both ends, but the Apache's dual-channel ABS offers better safety compared to the Pulsar's single-channel ABS setup. Additionally, both bikes have a 12-liter fuel tank.

Pricing

For riders seeking a fresher design and modern features, the 2020 TVS Apache RTR 200 4V priced at Rs 1.25 lakh makes an appealing choice. However, for those prioritizing sporty performance, the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 remains an attractive option at Rs 1.24 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom, Pune).
