India's sub-4-metre SUV wholesales reached 8,13,657 units in April–September 2026, up 28% year-on-year, according to matching compiled industry reports for H1 FY2027. Tata Punch and Nexon occupied the top two model positions, while Maruti Fronx followed closely behind Nexon. These figures track wholesales into the distribution channel; they are not retail registrations or a count of vehicles handed over to buyers.
The leading models in H1 FY2027
| Model | April–September 2026 wholesales | Reported year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Punch | 1,23,287 | +68% |
| Tata Nexon | 1,11,919 | +25% |
| Maruti Fronx | 1,10,135 | +43% |
| Maruti Brezza | 80,516 | −5% |
| Hyundai Venue | 68,836 | +38% |
| Kia Sonet | 56,929 | +21% |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO | 52,851 | +19% |
| Mahindra Bolero | 51,720 | +30% |
| Hyundai Exter | 46,156 | +40% |
| Mahindra Thar, three-door | 25,424 | +34% |
The classification follows the source reports' sub-4-metre SUV grouping, which includes utility-oriented models such as Bolero and the three-door Thar. It should not be silently substituted for a different publication's crossover or compact-SUV definition.
Punch leads, while Nexon and Fronx are close
Punch's 1,23,287 units put it 11,368 ahead of Nexon. The gap between Nexon and Fronx was much narrower, at 1,784 units. Those differences are calculated directly from the reported six-month volumes, not forecasts of the next month's rankings.
Together, Punch and Nexon accounted for 2,35,206 units, or approximately 28.9% of the reported segment total. That is a combined two-model share within this particular grouping. It is not Tata's share of all Indian passenger vehicles, and it should not be read as a separate manufacturer total that automatically includes every other Tata product.

Growth was broad, but not uniform
Nine of the ten listed models showed positive year-on-year change. Brezza was the exception, with 80,516 units and a reported decline of 5%. Punch posted the largest percentage increase among these ten, while Fronx, Exter and Venue also grew strongly. A high growth percentage describes change against the previous year's base; it does not make a smaller model's absolute volume larger than a higher-selling rival.
The ten entries sum to 7,27,773 units, about 89.4% of the segment total. This calculation leaves the rest of the reported segment outside the table, so the table should not be mistaken for an exhaustive list of every model included in the 8,13,657-unit figure.
What wholesales can and cannot tell buyers
Wholesale growth helps show the scale of manufacturer dispatches across a defined period. Retail registrations, dealer inventory, local waiting times and discounts answer different questions. A wholesale ranking alone does not establish which vehicle is safer, more reliable, more economical or better suited to an individual buyer.
For a purchase decision, compare the actual variant, powertrain, equipment, total quotation and availability in your city. These six-month numbers also do not establish a full-year result: the remaining months of FY2027 may change both totals and rankings.
Data basis
The total, period and model volumes match two reviewed compiled industry reports. The underlying complete primary market dataset was not supplied in the reviewed material, so the figures are presented with their reporting basis rather than as an independently audited dataset. Percentage changes in the table are the reports' rounded values; combined shares and unit gaps above are explicitly calculated from the displayed numbers.
