BMW has launched the new X1 Long Wheelbase in India at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹49.90 lakh. The petrol SUV is locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai and bookings are open through authorised dealerships.

The headline change is a longer 2,800 mm wheelbase, up by 108 mm. BMW says this creates 150 mm more rear legroom and 109 mm more kneeroom, making the new version notably more rear-seat focused than the regular X1.

  • Wheelbase: 2,800 mm

Space and practicality

Rear passengers get reclining backrests up to 28.5 degrees, while the seats use longer cushions and additional bolstering. Boot capacity is 540 litres and can expand to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded.

The cabin also features a nine-square-foot panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front sport seats, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and a curved widescreen display running BMW Operating System 9.

Engine and technology

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine sends 156 hp and 230 Nm to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. BMW quotes fuel efficiency of 15.5 km/l.

Equipment highlights include adaptive LED headlights, Digital Key Plus, Comfort Access 2.0, over-the-air software updates and a vertically mounted wireless phone charger. Digital Key Plus can use a compatible phone or smartwatch to lock, unlock and start the vehicle.

Maxabout's take

The X1 LWB is aimed at buyers who want compact-luxury dimensions but put rear-seat room and comfort high on the list. Its introductory price places a premium on that added space, so a test drive should include time in the second row as well as behind the wheel.
