Bharat NCAP's Safety Milestone: Crash Testing Set to Begin on December 15

Introduction

India's revolutionary car safety program, the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP), introduced in August 2023, was initially poised for a formal launch on October 1. However, the latest reports now indicate that the comprehensive crash tests will kick off on December 15.

Which Cars Will Face the Rigorous Tests?

Among the initial vehicles slated for these crucial crash tests are the recently unveiled 2023 Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelifts. Additionally, Bharat NCAP plans to subject 3 models from Maruti, 3 from Hyundai, and 4 from Mahindra to rigorous examinations.

It's worth noting that certain global automotive giants, including Renault, Skoda, and Volkswagen, have yet to nominate any models for testing under Bharat NCAP. This may be attributed to the commendable safety ratings already achieved by several of their models, especially from Skoda and VW, courtesy of Global NCAP’s stringent crash test norms.

Unveiling the Testing Criteria and Process

Bharat NCAP's testing criteria closely align with the rigorous standards set by Global NCAP. Each car nominated will undergo a series of five crucial tests, covering frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact, electronic stability control evaluation, and compliance with pedestrian-friendly front designs.

The outcomes of these assessments will not only serve as benchmarks for adult occupant protection but also provide insights into child occupant protection. For a more in-depth understanding of Bharat NCAP’s testing parameters, those interested can find additional information here.

Paving the Way for Future Safety Enhancements

Bharat NCAP envisions continuous refinement of its safety standards. A significant upcoming addition is the planned inclusion of a rear crash impact protection test in its evaluation criteria. This strategic enhancement aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a vehicle's safety profile.

Furthermore, the Indian government is gearing up to strengthen testing requirements. In the near future, Bharat NCAP may mandate advanced driver assistance systems, including lane departure warning, brake assist, and autonomous emergency braking, to secure a more holistic safety rating.

Bharat NCAP is poised to commence its impactful crash testing on December 15, featuring models from Tata, Maruti, Hyundai, and Mahindra. The program meticulously aligns with global safety standards, and exciting plans are underway to broaden safety criteria to encompass a broader spectrum of potential risks. Stay tuned for comprehensive updates on the evolving landscape of car safety in India.
