2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift to Receive a 1.2-Litre Z12E Three-Cylinder Petrol Engine

Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the next-gen Swift concept in Japan, and it is expected to debut in India in 2024. One of the key highlights of the upcoming hatchback is its new engine which has been revealed in Japan.

The new powertrain is Maruti's 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine will replace the existing 89PS 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit. While the power figures are likely to be similar to the outgoing engine, the new naturally aspirated engine is expected to deliver improved fuel economy and it will also come equipped with mild-hybrid technology.

In Japan, this engine will be mated to a CVT gearbox, but for the Indian market, a manual transmission is expected. It remains to be seen if Maruti will offer the new Swift with a CVT or an AMT option in India.

The Swift Concept showcased at the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show provides a glimpse of the next-gen Swift. Testing has already begun in India, and the model is expected to feature certain Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features.

In the Indian market, the next-gen Swift is likely to command a premium over the current model, which starts at Rs. 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with vehicles like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Tata Punch, and Renault Triber.
