I think it's more that the vehicle has the capabilities. If you are normally a calm driver, it is easy to get tempted to use that much power and size.

Most users are definitely overrated. I have had my Fortuner for 3 years and never taken it off road. I like the peace of mind it provides but it’s overkill for city use.

Not overrated at all. While you might not go proper off roading, the Fortuner’s capability is pretty good for bad roads, waterlogged streets and the odd trip to a farmhouse or hill station.
