Is the Toyota Fortuner's off road capability overrated for most Indian users?
The Toyota Fortuner is known for being well capable of performing off road with its robust build, high ground clearance and 4x4 system. In the Indian context, however, where most SUVs lead their lives on city roads and highways, the question is if this off road prowess is really necessary or used by the average owner. The idea of having a capable off road vehicle, even if you’ll never take it off the tarmac, appeals to many buyers. The result has been debate as to whether the Fortuner's rugged construction and off road features are overkill for urban use, possibly at the cost of on road comfort and fuel efficiency. While some believe its design justifies its ability to handle rough Indian roads and occasionally flooded streets, others think that more road oriented SUVs could suit most people better. As soft roader and crossover popularity rises and gives buyers a more car like driving experience, is the Fortuners real off road capability still a relevant selling point for the majority of its target market?
Most users are definitely overrated. I have had my Fortuner for 3 years and never taken it off road. I like the peace of mind it provides but it’s overkill for city use.
Not overrated at all. While you might not go proper off roading, the Fortuner’s capability is pretty good for bad roads, waterlogged streets and the odd trip to a farmhouse or hill station.
It’s like buying a gaming laptop just for browsing and MS Office. It works, but you're not using all the features and paying more than you need to.
That's what makes it a Fortuner, its off road capability. If you want a soft roader, buy something else. Just because some owners don’t use it fully, don’t dilute the Fortuner’s DNA.
I think the possibility is more than the use. Even if you rarely do, knowing you can go anywhere is a big part of the appeal.
I've taken my Fortuner off road and it's not overrated. I agree with most owners that they don't need or use this capability.
It's not just about being able to go to extreme places off road. It’s about how to handle whatever Indian roads can throw at you, be it potholes, floods or even a farmer’s tractor in the middle of the road. In that sense, it's very relevant.
