Windshield or bumper work on ADAS cars: which calibration records should owners collect before claim sign-off?
Windshield, bumper and grille damage can affect more than the visible body part on an ADAS-equipped car. Depending on the model, forward cameras may sit behind the windshield, while radar or other sensors may be mounted behind the bumper or grille. Replacing, removing or repositioning those parts can disturb sensor alignment even when the new panel or glass appears correctly fitted.
Calibration is model-specific
Some vehicles require static calibration in a workshop setup, some require dynamic calibration during a prescribed road procedure, and some may require both. The correct process depends on the vehicle and repair, so a generic “ADAS reset” is not equivalent evidence.
What to get documented
- Initial diagnostic scan showing stored faults or sensor-related warnings before repair.
- Separate estimate lines for the damaged part, replacement labour and ADAS calibration.
- Exact part numbers for glass, brackets, bumper or grille pieces or sensor components being replaced.
- Written insurer approval scope showing which replacement and calibration operations are authorised.
- Final calibration report or job record, plus any post-repair diagnostic scan.
- Warranty terms for fitted parts and calibration work.
- Warning-light and relevant ADAS-function check before handover.
Insurance coverage, approvals and payable amounts vary by policy and claim facts, so there is no universal rule that every calibration or sensor replacement will be covered. The key comparison is whether the repair plan matches the vehicle's documented procedure and whether claim approval includes the necessary work.
Decision dimensions: verify calibration evidence and post-repair function checks; then compare insurer-approved scope with part numbers, warranty terms and any excluded repair lines.
