Will Toyota Rumion eat into sales of other Toyota models or draw new customers to the brand?
With the introduction of the Toyota Rumion, the company adds an interesting question as to what impact the new vehicle will have on Toyota's existing models and brand strategy in India. High profile of our brand is the main reason why we cannot risk our SUV dominance by offering customers a better and cheaper SUV alternative. On the other hand, it could lure new buyers to the Toyota brand who couldn't before afford their vehicles or who were looking for a smaller MPV. The necessity of all of this prompts the conversation about market segmentation, brand positioning, as well as the fine line between the diversification and premium model exclusivity. It also comments on the wider strategy of expanding market presence through the use of rebadged vehicles, and whether that strategy is in fact growing the customer base or simply reorganizing the current pool of Toyota loyalists.
I think it will attract new customers to Toyota who couldn't afford an Innova but want the brand's reliability.
It will surely eat into Innova sales a bit, but will definitely steal more customers from other brands MPVs.
Doubt it'll cannibalize much. The buyer for Rumion and Innova is pretty different, it's not an either or situation.
But it could backfire by making people wonder why they should pay more for 'real' Toyotas when this is so much cheaper.
A smart decision to encroach on the budget MPV market. New people will definitely be brought to Toyota showrooms.
It might cannibalize some Innova sales, but it will probably hurt Maruti more, by stealing Ertiga customers.
It's a gateway car. With the Rumion, get people into the Toyota family and upgrade them to an Innova later.
