Will the XSR300 be moddable as much as the original RD350?
The Yamaha RD350 is one of the bikes that had incredible potential for modification. The two stroke engine could be tweaked to squeeze some impressive performance gains out of it with relatively simple tweaks. With the XSR300 now on the horizon, enthusiasts are wondering if the bike could be customized. While they are definitely more complicated, they also afford more opportunity. Will the XSR300 carry on being a tinkerer's dream, or will it be more of a sealed unit? We’ll discuss the potential for performance mods and aesthetic customization and how this might compare to the legendary modability of the RD350.
There's no chance it'll be as moddable as the RD350. All the electronics in modern bikes make them too complicated. Just looking at it funny will void the warranty.
I think that it'll be plenty moddable, just not in the same ways. Yeah, it won’t bore out easily, but there will be tons of bolt on parts and ECU tuning options.
Aesthetics will be the real modding potential. We'll see some killer cafe racer and scrambler conversions within months of release, I bet.
If there’s an aftermarket, anything can be modded. It might be more work than the RD350, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I'm optimistic. It's understandable, Yamaha knows their audience for this bike. Even if it's not as open as the old two-strokes, they'll probably build it with some kind of customization in mind.
Who cares about engine mods? Suspension upgrades will be the real fun. Now imagine this lightweight chassis with some high end bouncy bits!
Let's not forget about 3D printing. Yamaha could lock things down, but the community will always find a way to mod this bike that we can’t even think of yet.
