Will the XEV 7e's AWD system turn it into a true off roader?

Off road enthusiasts are buzzing with rumors that the Mahindra XEV 7e, which will come with an all wheel drive (AWD) system. But there is disagreement as to whether or not this electric SUV can actually take on some serious off roading. But AWD alone doesn’t make a vehicle off-road capable, some argue, because there are other factors, such as ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and suspension travel. Some think that the electric motors instant torque would offer better traction in difficult terrains. And there's discussion about how the heavy battery pack might affect the vehicle's center of gravity and off road performance. Further, worries over the longevity of electric components in brutal off road conditions are being expressed. It also asks us if Mahindra is aiming for the serious off-roaders, or if the AWD is just to improve on road behavior and light off road use.

Off roading is great, but AWD is not everything. Before we get too excited we need to see the ground clearance and angles. Though electric torque could be a game changer!

99% of XEV 7e owners will never take it off road, let’s be real. The AWD is just for better on road handling and at best maybe some light trails.

I feel Mahindra's off road experience with Thar will work well here. Even if it’s electric, they know what it takes to make a capable off roader.

The problem is going to be the weight of the batteries off road. It will not sink in soft terrain, but will affect stability on inclines. I remain sceptical about its true off road potential.

You are forgetting about the ability to control electric motors with high precision torque. All this may render XEV 7e superior to the conventional AWD systems in some instances.

When off roading I am more concerned with range. In demanding conditions, electric vehicles lose charge quickly. If you can’t get back, what’s the point of off road capability?

Kuldeep on 02 December 2024 06:23
The real question is how long will it last? Do the electric components work in water crossings, dust, and constant vibrations? It's what will tell us if it's a true off roader.
