Will the improved safety and features of the new Dzire kill the compact SUV trend?

by @ashutosh.kumarover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
The compact SUV segment has taken off in India at the cost of traditional sedans such as the Dzire. Compact SUVs have lured in many buyers for their perceived safety, higher seating position and feature rich packages. But with the new Dzire reportedly being a 5 star safety rated car with ADAS and a more premium feel, it has chipped away at many of the advantages compact SUVs have been touting. The question then arises whether better equipped, safer sedans such as the new Dzire could restart the pendulum from the sedan body style, given their generally better fuel efficiency and lower price point than compact SUVs. Changing consumer preferences, the practicality of sedans versus SUVs in Indian driving conditions come up and whether the marquee Indian auto market is set on a potentially wider mind shift.

Real talk: a lot of compact SUV buyers are buying in the name of the image. That fancy Dzire isn’t going to turn that mindset around overnight.

It has the safety and features of an SUV, without a boat to tow it… and all in a hatchback that won’t kill your gas mileage. I see it appealing to the city dwellers that want the feature but don’t require the bulk of an SUV. It could be a game changer in metros.

It's not just about features. Our roads and floods are better with SUVs. The ground clearance of the Dzire can’t be changed.

It could be huge for sedan lovers. So finally we can get all the good stuff without having to go for a bulky SUV!

It's going to eat a little bit into the compact SUV market, I think, but not kill it. Some people just like the SUV look, no matter what.

It might actually! What people bought was compact SUVs to be safe. Many might prefer the better fuel efficiency if sedans can do that.

No way. And compact SUVs still have the big selling points of high seating position and road presence. That is something which the Dzire can not compete with.
