Will the Creta EV be as good as its ICE counterpart?
The Creta EV's introduction brings to mind how it will compare with the ICE version that Indian consumers are used to. Instant torque and smooth acceleration for which electric vehicles are famous come with added weight from the battery pack. This good for the Creta EV's class is all the more impressive given its 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds. But straight line speed isn’t everything when it comes to performance. However there are factors such as handling, braking and overall driving dynamics we need to consider too. Of course the extra weight of the batteries could affect the cars center of gravity, and potentially its cornering abilities. In contrast the lower center of gravity could improve stability. The electric powertrain also raises the question of how it will fare with Indian driving conditions, which include varied terrain and extreme temperatures. Will the Creta EV bring a similar or better driving experience to its ICE sibling or will it feel like an entirely different car? How will all of that affect the way that consumers perceive and adopt the electric version?
When driving in the city, the EV will feel way more responsive due to the instant torque. I also bet that it will be more fun to drive than the ICE version, especially for stop and go traffic.
Acceleration is not the only performance. The extra batteries may weigh it down in the corners a little. I'm interested to see what they've done to tune the suspension for this.
The EV ICE Creta isn't going to be a performance car by any means, so it might actually be an improvement. For this segment, that 7.9 second 0-100 time is pretty decent.
The big concern for me though is how it will do in extreme heat. Will we see a drop in range or throttling in performance during Indian summers? That may be a deal breaker for some.
Long distance driving will be the real test. It is famous for being a comfortable highway cruiser in ICE form. If the EV can match that while maintaining good range, then it’s a no brainer.
And let’s not forget about maintenance. A performance factor in its own right, performance of your wallet!, is that the EV should theoretically need less regular maintenance.
It'll be a totally different driving experience, I think. They are not better or worse than the other, just different. Long-time ICE Creta owners might have to get used to it.
