Will the BYD eMAX 7's battery warranty fend off range anxiety for potential buyers?
Range anxiety is one of the biggest concerns for electric vehicle buyers, and especially so in the MPV segment. One of the biggest deterrents to potential customers is this fear of running out of charge on long trips. To tackle this problem, BYD has tried to solve it with the eMAX 7, which has an impressive 530 km range per charge. Plus, they should offer a big battery warranty like the 8 year or 500,000 km warranty they offer on the E6. This warranty may cover capacity retention of the battery and any defects. But whether such warranties will actually alleviate range anxiety in the real world is yet to be seen. If one manufacturer has the confidence to make an electric MPV, will buyers feel confident enough to make the switch? Or will assurances that EVs are practical for long distance travel finally overcome concerns that they are not?
What a huge plus for the battery warranty! It proves that BYD is confident in their tech, and I would be much more likely to go electric knowing you are covered for 8 years or 500,000 km.
Range anxiety isn't just about the battery, and warranty or not. And it’s also about the charging infrastructure. People will still worry until we have reliable fast charging stations every 100 km on highways.
I think it does help, but it's not a total answer. The warranty is great for peace of mind, but it doesn't help you when you are out in the middle of nowhere and your battery is low and you can't find a charger.
I can talk from experience as a person who has driven EVs, range anxiety fades. The warranty is nice, but it’s the range and how the car actually performs in real world conditions that really counts.
That’s a step in the right direction, but what I’m really curious about is how the battery will fare after a few years. If it is used 3-4 years, will it still come close to the advertised range? That's the real test.
