Will the boxy design of Maruti NEXA Jimny EV affect its range or is it a necessary evil to retain the character?
It is crucial to the Jimny identity to have the iconic boxy design, reminiscent of classic off roadders. But in the world of EVs, aerodynamics matter a lot to range and efficiency. The boxy shape is great for visibility and off road articulation, but not so good at slipping through the air. That could mean the range will be lower than in more streamlined electric SUVs. However, taking away too much of the Jimny’s DNA will likely be a turn off to its loyal supporters. The boxy shape also allows for more interior space and better packaging of batteries, he says. The question is whether Maruti should focus on making the Jimny range and efficient or stick to the Jimny's design heritage. There has to be a middle ground that will satisfy both these camps, or will one have to be sacrificed for the other?
The Jimny’s soul is this boxy design! So who cares if we lose a few km of range? It's not meant to cruiser at long distance anyway.
Every bit of range counts in the EV world. At the least, they should round some edges off to make things more efficient. That doesn’t have to be a literal box, it can still look rugged.
Perhaps there's some clever aero bits they could add, such as something as simple as retractable flaps, or something as complex as the active front grille. Best of both worlds!
The boxy design actually makes interior space. That extra room could be used for a larger battery to make up for the aero penalty.
Anyone buying a Jimny EV isn’t too worried about maximum range, let’s be honest. It’s about the style and how capable you are.
I’m sure they could do something to improve the aero without altering the overall look. Small tweaks to the windshield angle or underbody could be a big difference maker.
Could the boxy shape actually help with cooling the battery pack? Form can follow function sometimes!
