Will the Bajaj Darkstar cannibalize sales of other Bajaj models?
The company already has a huge range of motorcycles in their inventory, with multiple variants of the Pulsar series. The introduction of the Darkstar will especially, if it is based on the Pulsar 250 platform, overlap in the price and target audience with existing models. But this does raise the question whether the Darkstar will merely take away sales from other Bajaj bikes rather than bring new customers or compete with other brands. The other question is how this will impact Bajaj's partnership with KTM, which also makes adventure bikes in the same segment. There are some voices who argue that having a diverse lineup is good for consumer choice and others fear it may too add confusion and complication of Bajaj brand identity.
I doubt it will be a huge thing. The Pulsars with ADV styling and features will appeal to a different type of rider than the regular Pulsars.
It might eat into Dominar sales a bit but that’s probably intentional. In that segment Bajaj needs a fresher offering.
Cannibalization is overblown. The more options, the more potential customers overall. It's not a zero-sum game.
I'm afraid it will confuse things. Bajaj already has too many of such similar models. They don’t need to add more confusion, they need to streamline.
Bringing more people into Bajaj showrooms could actually help other models. Some will visit the Darkstar, but they'll be leaving with a different Bajaj bike that'd be more suitable for them.
The real question is what it will do to KTM sales. Maybe Bajaj are trying to get a piece of that market for themselves with a cheaper option.
It could become a new segment for Bajaj without hurting their existing lineup as long as it's priced right.
