Will BYD Seagull’s success inspire other manufacturers to bring more affordable EVs to the market?

by @ashutosh.kumarover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
Its aggressive pricing strategy has shocked the automotive world, and may force other manufacturers to rethink their approach to affordable EVs. But this also begs the question whether established automakers can or will try to compete at this price point, and what it might do to the broader EV market. Others say the Seagull's success could accelerate the trend towards more affordable electric vehicles, speeding the death of internal combustion engines. Others are doubtful whether the major manufacturers will be willing or able to slash their profit margins in order to compete with BYD. And there's talk, too, about whether this race to the bottom on pricing could cause compromises in quality or features throughout the industry. Government policy, subsidies and different cost structures for different automakers complicate the situation.

The success of the Seagull could force innovation to come from some unexpected places. We may see other brands bring more stripped down, basic EVs for urban use.

It's not just about price. BYD has found a way to streamline production and bring down costs, so other manufacturers have to figure out how to do the same.

I believe the market will split. Luxury brands will concentrate on premium features and performance and budget brands will try to compete with BYD.

The real impact will likely come in the form of forcing other manufacturers to justify their higher prices. To compete, they'll have to provide clear advantages.

I think this might encourage them to make more affordable options, but we won't see anything quite as cheap as the Seagull from the big brands.

I'm skeptical. You can’t do that price point; big automakers have too much overhead. They'll probably target slightly higher segments.

I hope so! More affordable EVs are what we desperately need to accelerate adoption. Other manufacturers might need the Seagull to be the kick in the pants they needed.
