Which one of the two would be more appealing?
With the Classic 650 coming to Royal Enfield’s 650 twin lineup, there’s going to be some overlap in the market. The brand has a hugely successful model with the Interceptor 650, which blends retro styling with modern performance. With the Classic 650 now on the scene, it means potential buyers now have another option in the same displacement category. The question arises of how Royal Enfield will slot these bikes in, and if they will eat into each other's sales. The debate concerns what kind of riding experience each model provides, who it is aimed at and how it fits into the broader motorcycle market. There are those who say the Classic 650 will have more traditional appeal while others say the Interceptor’s versatility will keep it as the go to choice.
For the die-hard RE fans who want that iconic look with more power, Classic 650 should appeal to them. For riders looking for a more modern, versatile bike, the Interceptor will still be the go to.
I believe the Interceptor will actually take sales away from the Classic 650. A lot of people buy the Interceptor because it’s the most ‘classic looking’ 650 RE offers. With the same engine, now they'll have a true classic option.
Different crowd will attract. The Interceptor feels more like a competitor to Triumph (and other retro modern bikes) than a competitor to the Rocket. People who are looking for the pure, unadulterated Royal Enfield experience will be the ones who'll get the Classic 650.
It's a smart move by RE. Buyers will be able to enter the 650 range at a slightly lower price than the Interceptor, probably. It's all about options.
It's worrying that it might muddy the waters a bit. Care should be taken by RE not to have too many similar models. Instead, they should try to make each bike different enough from the others that it deserves to be part of the lineup.
