Where does the KTM 890 Adventure sit in terms of reliability compared to Japanese alternatives such as the Yamaha Tenere 700?
Many adventure bike buyers, who are about to embark on long-distance trips or remote off-road excursions, put reliability high on their list of priorities. While KTM is known to make fast motorcycles, there are some who worry that their long-term durability doesn’t hold up to Japanese manufacturers. However, the Yamaha Tenere 700 is frequently mentioned when thinking of a bulletproof middleweight adventure bike alternative. Rumors have swirled about the reliability of the KTM 890 Adventure—it can be babied and needs more maintenance than it is credited with—so we wanted to see for ourselves. What does the real-world experience of KTM owners look like compared to those riding Japanese alternatives?
I’ve put 20,000 miles on my 890 Adventure with no issues. Modern bikes are pretty solid across the board, and people love to bash KTM reliability.
The T7 is undoubtedly more bulletproof. My Tenere hasn't skipped a beat, while my buddy's 890 is on its second trip to the shop for electrical gremlins.
KTMs are more maintenance intensive, but if you keep on top of it, they are very reliable. In my book, the performance trade-off is worth it.
I think it really boils down to the bike and how the bike is treated. I’ve seen Yamahas and KTMs with issues. Any brand needs regular maintenance.
The 890 is reliable enough, but if something goes wrong, parts are a nightmare to find. You can usually find parts at least with Japanese bikes.
I've owned both, and the KTM is just better in every way overall. It’s a more capable machine in my experience, but yes, it needs more attention.
If you're going to go around the world, go Yamaha. The KTM is plenty reliable for everything else and way more fun to ride.
