When a car travels during repair: movement consent and handback evidence in India
Fresh Indian owner discussions show two handover risks: unexpected vehicle movement in workshop custody and a cashless repair allegedly moving to closure before the owner inspected it. These are individual reports, not proof of a common practice.
Record each handover stage
| Stage | Record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Intake | Job-card scope, odometer, fuel or charge, photos, accessories and existing damage. | Defines custody condition. |
| Movement | Written permission for road testing or transfer, destination, expected distance and transport method. | Separates necessary movement from unexplained use. |
| Repair | Itemised estimate, repair-versus-replace choice, insurer approval and consent for extra work. | Prevents assumed approval. |
| Status | Survey or approval records, parts updates, photos and reference numbers. | Creates a chronology. |
| Delivery | Final odometer, road-test explanation, repaired-area inspection, warning lights, invoice, warranty and unresolved-items note. | Supports acceptance or escalation. |
An insurer's published process may describe tracking and claim support, but the issued policy and individual file control. For an unresolved grievance, follow the insurer's written process before checking current Insurance Ombudsman eligibility and time limits.
Which movement should require advance consent, and which mismatch would pause delivery: unexplained kilometres, changed scope, missing records, poor repair or claim closure before inspection?
