What's the space and practicality compared to newer seven seater SUVs?

The Mahindra XUV500 was an early entrant into the affordable 7 seater SUV segment in India. But the market has since been inundated with newer options that come in all manner of seating configurations and clever storage solutions. The question here is to find out how the XUV500's interior space, seating comfort and practicality fares against more recent rivals. Are the three rows truly usable? How much cargo space does it have when all seats are in use, and when the third row is folded? Can the XUV500 still be viewed as a practical machine by virtue of its unique storage solutions or features? So we are going to talk about the good and bad of the XUV500's interior packaging and if it still cuts it for large families in 2024.

I’ve had an XUV500 for years and it’s still so practical. More than I can say for some newer '7 seaters', the third row is usable by adults for short trips. Multiple storage spaces and the flip side cup holders are really handy. Not equipped with fancy new features like other SUVs, but space and practicality don't come much better than this.

I recently compared the XUV500 against the Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus, and I’d say that the XUV500 has its space. Safari has a bit more legroom in the third row but when it comes to overall space utilization, the XUV500 comes out a winner. The only downside is that the loading lip for the boot is very high, and can be a pain when loading heavy items.

For a family of five with two teenagers, the XUV500 is just what we needed. The second and third row are very spacious, and their friends will fit in third row for short trips. There's little boot space with all seats up, but fold the third row and it's huge. Modern SUVs may have more fancy interiors, but of basic practicality the XUV500 is tough to beat.

The XUV500's practicality I think is starting to show its age. The newer SUVs such as the Kia Carens offer flexible seating options besides several clever storage solutions. The XUV500's third row is all right, but it isn't as comfortable or as easy to get into as some more recent designs. With the packaging feeling a little old school now, it's still spacious.

Being tall, I like the headroom and legroom on offer in the second row as well. On long drives, though, I prefer the seats in newer SUVs. The XUV500 is practical, but some of the thoughtful touches you get in more modern designs, such as underfloor storage or one touch folding seats, are missing.
