What’s the longevity of the DB9 Volante convertible top?

Question

The DB9 Volante is famous for its bold design and V12 engine, but there are many things about the car that don’t get the same attention. Many owners find unexpected qualities or features that improve their experience but are not well talked about. This range could include practical issues such as storage solutions or comfort features, or more subtle areas of the driving dynamics or interior design. The discussion around underrated features tends to give an insight into the day to day ownership experience and the thought that Aston Martin put into the DB9 Volante. It also shows how different owners appreciate different things about the car — things that weren't necessarily selling points for the car.

@ashish-kum · Accepted Answer

The build quality is probably it. Old British cars are assumed to be unreliable, but the DB9 has impressive attention to detail.

@punit-kuma · Answer

Functional and cool is how the doors open slightly upward. It also stops it scraping on high curbs and adds to the special feeling.

@animesh-ch · Answer

The most underrated is that it flies under the radar compared to other exotics. It’s not flashy or anything, but it’s special.

@love-goyal · Answer

People underestimate the usefulness of the rear seats. They’re not for adults but are excellent for extra luggage on a weekend trip.

@akshat-vij · Answer

I like the little things, such as power folding mirrors. It is a small thing but it indicates the thinking put into everyday usability.

@saket-jha · Answer

The car is underappreciated in the way that it transforms from GT cruiser to sports car with a push of the sport button. It's like having two cars all in one.

@sakshi-gup · Answer

The underrated feature is how easy it is to drive slowly. But it’s not just a speed demon, it’s perfectly happy to cruise at low speeds in town.

@deepak-khu · Answer

In spite of being a convertible, the trunk space is surprisingly decent. More than I expected, I can fit a couple of golf bags in there.

@kapil-devs · Answer

I'd say it's the seats. They are incredibly comfortable on long drives, but they look thin and sporty. Perfect balance of support and comfort.

@rahul-kuma · Answer

Sound system is definitely the most underrated feature. No one expects the audio quality to be good, but it is, for a convertible.

@sakshi-gup · Answer

The actual convertible top has been more trouble than the windows not sealing properly. This is a common issue to watch out for.

@gaurav-ver · Answer

The top has been good but the hydraulic system that works it has been a bit of a problem. Be mindful of fluid levels and make a note of any unusual noises.

@deepak-khu · Answer

Mine are stored in a garage and the top is rarely used. It's perfect after 10 years. But if you’re buying one, low usage of the mechanism is a good thing.

@priyanka-k · Answer

In my experience, leaks are more of a problem than wind noise. Not bad, but noticeable compared to modern convertibles.

@priyanka-r · Answer

The early models had some problems, but Aston improved the design over the years. This aspect is much more reliable in later DB9 Volantes.

@raj-kiran · Answer

I have not had any problems with my top in 5 years of ownership. Just treat it right – don’t use it in extreme temperatures and clean it.
