What is the story behind the 8C's 'robotized manual' transmission?

by Sukhmandeep Kaurover 1 year ago0 views9 comments
The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was also fitted with a 6-speed 'robotized manual' transmission, or single clutch automated manual. In the mid 2000s this type of gearbox was popular for high performance cars as it promised the engagement of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. Yet, these transmissions received highly variable reviews with some lauding them for their quick shifts, while others cursed them for their jerky operation, especially at low speeds. In particular, the 8C's transmission has been something of a subject of debate among enthusiasts and reviewers. It's this sour note that also divides opinion, some believe it enhances the car's character, while others consider it the weakest aspect of what is otherwise a very good piece of kit. Now let’s dive into the pros and cons of this much debated gearbox and how it affects the 8C driving experience.

The Achilles' heel of the 8C is definitely that. Can you imagine what the car would be like with a modern dual clutch or even a good old manual?

I believe it suits the car's ethos. The 8C isn’t supposed to be some perfectly polished modern supercar. It has quirks, and that’s alright.

It’s not good, but it’s not as terrible as some make it out to be. It's plus the sound of those throttle blips on a downshift... worth it.

I see it as a fun challenge. Part of the charm is learning to master the timing of the shifts. This is like learning to drive all over again.

It's a deal-breaker for me. It's a clunky transmission on a car that should be above such things. It ruins the experience.

I feel people are really hard on it. It’s a product of its time, and once you learn its quirks it can be rewarding.

Honest to God, it's the worst part of the car. A proper auto or manual should have been Alfa's choice. This halfway house doesn't work.

I actually like it. This is part of the character of the car. It’s not as smooth as modern dual clutch boxes, but it makes you feel more involved.

It's a love-hate thing. It's great when you're pushing hard. But in traffic? Prepare for some jerky rides, oof.
