What is the Duke 790 like for touring long distances?

The KTM Duke 790 is most known for being a sporty naked bike, but some riders are interested in how it can be used for longer trips and light touring. This then begs questions about how comfortable we’d be over long periods, what the fuel range would be, how we’d be able to carry luggage, and how well the bike’s performance characteristics translate to highway cruising. It's an upright, ergonomic, powerful engine tourer, say some, while others claim it's a touring bike that lacks the wind protection and creature comforts that purpose-built touring bikes offer. The debate also rages as to whether or not aftermarket screens and seats can turn the 790 into a competent long-distance machine or if riders should just go with something else for touring duties.

It's not perfect, but it can happen. Mine did a 1000-mile weekend with a tail bag and tank bag. The biggest issue is wind protection.

Forget it. While the 790 is fun for blasting around, it’s miserable on long highway stretches. If you want to tour, get an adventure bike.

Mine I've done some light touring on it, and it was fine. Just add a windscreen and some soft luggage, and you're good to go.

The weak point for long rides is in the seat. Upgrade that, and it surprisingly makes for a decent sport tourer.

I couldn't do more than a few hours on it at a time. It's just not a comfortable thing to travel long distances on.

If you like a sportier ride, it's actually pretty good for touring. It handles twisty roads like a champ, and passing is a breeze.

I’ve ridden several multi-day trips on a 790. It may not be as plush as a dedicated tourer, but it’s a lot of fun in the corners.

This is the biggest limitation for touring. Every 120-150 miles you'll be stopping to fill up.

It's doable but not ideal. After a few hours, the vibrations start to get to you. It’s great for spirited day trips, though.

I love touring on mine. And it’s engaging rather than a big, comfy tourer. The solution is to just pack light and enjoy the sportiness of the bike.
