What is the comparison of the iMT transmission in the Sonet Anniversary Edition with manual and automatic transmission?

Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) is a relatively new technology in the Indian market and the Kia Sonet Anniversary Edition comes with this option. The intention of this transmission type is to combine the control of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. It’s a clutchless set up where the driver still selects his own gears, but without the requirement of a clutch pedal to operate. The driving experience, long term reliability and effectiveness of this system compared to conventional manual and automatic transmissions has carried on a debate in the car enthusiast community. It's been roundly praised for its ease of use in city traffic, but others have questioned whether it's sporty enough to engage enthusiast drivers. It also raises questions around its maintenance costs and long term durability, as it’s a new technology with fewer long term data available.

The iMT is a game-changer when it comes to city driving, I've driven it. Goodbye clutch leg in traffic jams!

It’s a nice middle ground but I miss the full control of a traditional manual. Perfectly timed clutch work is something satisfying.

For newbies, it's great. For enthusiasts, however, it saps some of the fun of driving. I only like full manual or full auto.

But the iMT is smart, and I am concerned about long term reliability. There are teething issues with new tech.

Perfect for my daily commute. Traffic is easy but I still have control of gears when I want it. Best of both worlds!

I'm not convinced. This all seems to be a solution to a problem that didn’t really exist. All you need to do is learn to drive manual properly!

I’ve driven both, and the iMT is surprisingly intuitive. I got used to it in about 10 minutes and now I love it.

It’s more fuel efficient than a traditional auto, but not quite as fuel efficient as a skilled manual driver. But it's a good compromise.
