What is the Alfa Romeo MiTo like to drive?

Alfa Romeo brand is known for sporty, engaging driving dynamics and MiTo was an attempt to offer some portion of that experience at an attainable price. Car people regularly argue about whether the MiTo really lives up to the Alfa Romeo heritage, and how it compares to the MINI Cooper or Audi A1 for fun to drive. The car and its handling characteristics, steering feel, and performance are mostly what is discussed. The MultiAir engine options also creates interest in how the different engine options influence the driving experience. On one side there are those who say the MiTo combines Italian flair with accessible performance, the other that it fails to deliver the driving thrills you expect from an Alfa Romeo badge. It's a conversation that often centers around whether the MiTo manages to straddle the divide between the every day practicality and the sporty character that Alfa Romeo is famous for.

I've driven the MiTo and a MINI Cooper, and honestly the Alfa is more fun. With the DNA system in Dynamic mode it feels more alive somehow. The steering is also more communicative.

The MiTo does have a bit of a rougher edge than my friend's Audi A1. But the Audi is more refined, the Alfa more raw. It all depends on what you’re after.

People expect too much from the MiTo, I think. This is not a sports car, it’s a sporty supermini. I think it drives great for what it is. Around town, it's zippy, and it can still be fun on a back road.

My MiTo has a MultiAir engine, which is a gem. It’s responsive and has a nice little growl to it. A bit more exciting than your average small car makes everyday driving.

My MiTo’s driving experience is a bit disappointing. The DNA system is cool but even in Dynamic mode it doesn’t feel as sharp as I would have expected from an Alfa. In terms of go kart like handling, the MINI has the edge.

The MiTo is a good compromise for me. It’s more comfortable than a MINI for daily driving but still puts a smile on your face if you ask it to. It's a good all-rounder.

For me, the standout feature is the steering feel. It is way more direct and communicative than most cars at this class. It makes you feel closer to the road.

The MiTo, I think, drives well, but it doesn't quite take you all the way to the full Alfa Romeo experience. It's like Alfa-lite. Fun, but not as engaging as their bigger models.
