What does changing a Thunderbird 500X do to its character and performance?
Enthusiasts enjoy modifying motorcycles and the Thunderbird 500X is no different. Many owners debate the pros and cons of anything from basic cosmetic changes to major performance upgrades. But common mods are aftermarket exhausts, air filters, and ECU remaps to increase power and amplify the exhaust note. The handling and comfort are also frequently discussed, and suspension upgrades are frequently mentioned. While I look to avoid changing my bike from the stock standard and keeping the original character, there are some who think that mods could fix some of the blueprint shortcomings of the 500X and enhance the riding experience. Reliability, fuel efficiency and resale value are where debate lies over impact of modifications. In addition, owners of rides they’d like to personalize are confronted with questions about the legality of certain modifications and also their effect on warranty coverage.
You can really make a Thunderbird 500X mod. The right exhaust and air filter combo will wake up the engine and make it sound much better. So be careful not to overdo it or you will ruin the reliability of the bike.
I’m a purist and I believe these bikes should be kept stock. It was designed that way for a reason and mods are more often than not just creating problems. Plus, it hurts resale value.
The way to go is subtle mods. Even somewhat moderate upgrades to things like a slightly louder exhaust, better tires, and possibly even upgraded brakes can really make the machine a nicer thing to ride without throwing the character of the bike much out of whack.
Half the fun of owning a Thunderbird 500X is Modding! It has so much potential to be customized exactly how you would like it to be. I’ve seen some amazing cafe racer and scrambler builds that totally change the bike.
It depends on your goals. Targeted mods can make a big overall difference if your looking to address specific issues like comfort or performance. If you're happy with the stock bike, then don't change anything.
I believe the most worthwhile mod for the Thunderbird 500X is suspension upgrades. Better shocks and fork internals can improve ride quality and handling by a lot without changing what the bike is.
Modding is a slippery slope. So you begin with a simple exhaust, and the next thing you know you’re doing engine work and spending more on mods than the bike is worth. Proceed with caution!
