What can Tata Motors learn from the TAMO RaceMo project?
Tata Motors' TAMO RaceMo project was a big project, even if it never saw production. It was a foray into a new segment, it required new technologies to be developed and it was to be a step towards being more premium and a performance oriented brand. The ultimate cancellation of the project probably taught the company some valuable lessons about the difficulties of building a sports car, the state of the market and the company itself. Tata’s future strategy could be based on understanding these lessons and as they broaden their product range and move into more premium segments. The impact of RaceMo on innovation, brand positioning and product development for Tata might go a long way.
The main thing is not to bite off more than you can chew. Start simple, start small, and continue to grow bigger.
They should learn that it’s all right to take risks. People got excited about Tata even if the RaceMo didn't work out.
Execute, not just ideas. The RaceMo looked good on paper, but bringing a car to production is a whole different ball game.
The moral of the story is, if you’re going to do something like this, commit fully. Halo products don’t work with half measures.
In turn, they should learn better to gauge market readiness. The RaceMo was cool, but was there a market for it in India?
Probably the biggest lesson is to manage expectations. They hyped it up before they were ready for all their ducks to be in a row.
I hope they didn’t learn to give up on exciting projects like this. Push the envelope, but maybe more realistically next time.
