What are the long term costs of Aftek Motors Eone compared to gas scooters?
Although the Aftek Motors Eone might be priced higher than some more conventional gas powered scooters, many point to how electric vehicles can save you money in the long run. I'd love to know the real world economics of owning an Eone vs a comparable gas scooter over a 5 year period. What are owners seeing in the way of electricity costs to charge versus fuel costs? How do maintenance expenses differ? Is there any hidden savings or costs not easily apparent? More importantly, how is battery degradation included in the long term cost equation? I’d love to hear from people who have made the switch from gas to the Eone, or even people who’ve done detailed cost comparisons. Are the long term savings as large as some would have us believe or are there other factors that cancel out the potential benefits?
Last year I switched from a gas scooter to the Eone and the savings are obvious. I spend way less on electricity than I did on petrol. It’s also easier to maintain with less stuff to fix.
It is more expensive up front, but it evens out in the long run. By this I save about 70% on "fuel" costs. The big unknown is, down the line, how much battery replacement will cost.
From my own experience, the savings aren't as dramatic as many will have you believe. It’s true charging is cheaper than gas, but electricity rates are going up. You may have to upgrade your home charging setup.
In the long run, I think the Eone is cheaper. It's not just about money though — I love not having to do the oil changes, the spark plugs, and all that stuff. It's so much simpler.
I have had mine for 2 years and I am saving money overall. Of course, you’ll want to factor in potential battery degradation so it may need to be replaced after 4-5 years of heavy use.
I’m going to say the math worked out in favor of the Eone for me, but it’s going to depend on your usage. The savings compound quicker if you’re doing long daily commutes. Maybe it doesn’t matter as much for occasional rides.
Also, don’t forget to think about resale value. But since electric scooters are relatively new, it’s hard to tell how their resale value will stack up against gas scooters. That could change the long term cost equation.
While the Eone has been much cheaper to run, there are some hidden costs. Installing a dedicated charging point at home is an extra expense, and I had to do that. Still worth it overall though.
