We test how the real-world fuel efficiency of the Sonet Anniversary Edition measures up to Kia's claims.

Official fuel efficiency figures for the Sonet, including the Anniversary Edition variants have been provided by Kia. Claimed efficiency for the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is around 18.3-18.6 km/l, while the 1.5-litre diesel engine claims about 19-22 km/l, depending on the transmission. Real world fuel economy, however is often not what the car manufacturers say for many reasons including driving conditions, traffic and driving style. What owners of the Sonet Anniversary Edition have been reporting in terms of fuel efficiency, has led to a discussion about how the car actually performs in day to day use. Some users are getting close to the claimed figures, but others are finding a significant difference. It has caused debates about how accurate manufacturer claims are, how different driving conditions affect economy, and how the Sonet compares to its rivals in terms of real world economy.

The Sonet's real world efficiency is much better than my old car. It won't hit the advertised numbers, but for its size and performance it's very good.

On long highway trips, I find fuel efficiency to be pretty consistent with what Kia's claims. The average is brought down by all the city driving.

It makes a huge difference what the traffic conditions are. With the petrol engine, I am barely crossing 10 km/l in Bangalore traffic.

The iMT version appears to be more efficient than DCT in real world conditions. I constantly get 1-2 km/l more.

I thought Kia’s claims were a little optimistic. All in all, I get about 16–17 km/l, which is good, but not really as high as advertised.

Your driving style really decides the fuel efficiency. With petrol I’ve managed to get close to 20 km/l on highways driving conservatively.

The diesel variant is almost on the claimed figures. In mixed driving conditions, I’m averaging around 18-19 km/l.

With the turbo petrol I'm getting about 14-15 km/l in the city, in my experience. That’s not bad, but not as low as Kia claimed.
