Was the Mahindra Naya Commander too good to be true?
Mahindra Naya Commander was a rugged MUV which rolled out between 2005 and 2010. The design was boxy, jeep like, and stood out amongst other vehicles of its time. As such, it appeared to strike a rather unusual balance between practicality and off road ability due to its 2.5L diesel engine, 4x4 capability and 9 seater configuration. It didn't become popular, but it was short lived and discontinued. Was the Naya Commander just misunderstood by the market or did it fundamentally fail to be successful? Was it a product that featured or had capabilities that were ahead of their time but that people didn’t fully appreciate then?
Nope, it was just a glorified Bolero with some extra bits added on. Nothing revolutionary about it.
In some ways, I’d say it was ahead. That was pretty unique for its time, that 9 seater config. Ideal for big families or small businesses.
It was trying to be too many things all at once. Not quite an SUV, not quite a people carrier. Jack of all trades, master of none.
It was definitely ahead of its time. Check out all the boxy SUVs that are so popular now. That look, Naya Commander had that way back in 2005.
Ahead of its time? More like stuck in the past. It looked like that thing was designed in the 80s.
It wasn't poorly marketed. I think that it was just poorly marketed. It could’ve been a hit with adventure enthusiasts and rural buyers with the right campaign.
It was a solid concept but badly executed. Had they refined it for another few years, it might have found its place.
