Was the Celerio X a car ahead of its time by predicting the mini-SUV trend?
The standard Celerio hatchback was launched in 2017 as the Celerio X, a more rugged and SUV inspired version. It was graced with body cladding, roof rails and more aggressive front fascia to look tougher. So at the time, it was a bit of a novelty for entry level to have such styling cues. In recent years, we have seen a slew of 'SUV inspired' small cars, and real mini SUVs like the Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, and Tata Punch make their debut in the market. Some have even gone as far as to argue that the Celerio X was actually ahead of the curve in predicting this trend towards more rugged looking small cars. Some argue that it was just a case of following the fashion of other markets and that the execution wasn’t unique enough to establish itself or its own segment.
Totally ahead of its time! Had Maruti stuck with it and evolved the concept, they would've probably beaten everyone to the mini SUV punch.
No, it was just the latest trend globally. It came before the Kwid which really kickstarted the rugged small car thing in India.
It wasn’t quite there, but it was a step in the right direction. Less a trendsetter and more of a test balloon.
The S-Presso could run, so the X walked. Even if they didn’t fully commit to it, Maruti was definitely onto something.
I think it was right on time, not ahead. Later models proved the market was ready for cars like this.
It sure predicted the styling trend. Now it missed the point with the added ground clearance people actually care about in these mini SUVs.
Maruti was dipping their toes in the water with the Celerio X. Perhaps they just used it to test the waters before going all in with the S-Presso.
