Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Honda CB500 in India: which retro roadster makes more sense?

by @privacyonwheels-8021 days ago4 views4 answers

The Triumph Bonneville T40 and Honda CB500 put two very different retro-roadster ideas within ₹5,000 of each other at their entry prices. The T40 is currently listed at ₹2.80 lakh ex-showroom, while the CB500 Alloy is listed at ₹2.75 lakh; on-road prices and availability vary by city.

Current India-market comparison

ModelListed/current priceEngine and outputBuyer-relevant distinction
Triumph Bonneville T40₹2.80 lakh ex-showroom350cc liquid-cooled single; 29hp and 31.2Nm790mm seat, 195kg kerb weight, tubed wire-spoke wheels, five riding modes and cruise control
Honda CB500 Alloy₹2.75 lakh ex-showroom501cc air/oil-cooled single; 28hp and 43.3NmAlloy-wheel entry variant, HSTC, slipper clutch and RoadSync
Honda CB500 cross-spoke₹3.00 lakh ex-showroomSame 501cc engineCross-spoke tubeless wheels
Honda CB500 top spoke variant₹3.02 lakh ex-showroomSame 501cc engineAdditional colours and graphics

The decision is not simply smaller versus larger displacement. Buyers should compare low-speed manageability, engine character, wheel and puncture implications, electronics, pillion needs, highway use, service reach and the final on-road quotation. Triumph deliveries are reported to begin in November 2026, so delivery timing should also be confirmed locally.

Which two factors would decide this purchase for you: engine character, weight, tyres, features, styling, service access, city use, highway use or resale? What is your city and total on-road budget?

Be cautious about equating stronger torque with an automatically better highway motorcycle. Stability, braking confidence, suspension control, rider triangle and pillion space determine how usable that output feels over distance. Compare both bikes at the intended cruising speed and load, then check whether the seat, footpeg position and luggage options remain comfortable after a longer test.

If regular highway trips are part of the plan, compare the complete running-cost picture: realistic fuel range, service intervals, tyre replacement cost and puncture convenience. The T40's tubed wire wheels and the CB500 variant's wheel choice can matter more on a tour than another electronic feature. Seat support and wind exposure also deserve a sustained test, not a short showroom loop.

The sensible verdict is to treat these as different interpretations of a retro roadster, not a simple 350cc-versus-501cc contest. The T40 bundles more electronic equipment at its listed price, while the CB500 Alloy offers the larger, higher-torque single and an alloy-wheel setup. Before choosing, verify final specifications, tyre type, braking equipment, delivery date and warranty in the written quotation. Launch figures describe the product; they do not prove reliability, comfort or ownership quality.

An overlooked cost is the service and parts path after purchase. Compare the written warranty, service intervals, nearest authorised workshop and prices for routine consumables before valuing the ₹5,000 entry-price difference. A slightly cheaper motorcycle can become the costlier choice if support requires long travel or common parts have uncertain lead times.
