There are many issues with the Aprilia SXR 160; are they resolved or still prevalent?
The Aprilia SXR 160 was launched in India with the promise of a premium Italian brand joining the maxi scooter segment. Like most newly launched vehicles, especially by brands that aren’t very popular in the Indian market, there were reliability concerns and reports about the same. These included everything from electrical issues to build quality issues. It's been a few years since the SXR 160 was launched, and it's time to take a peek at how the SXR 160 has held up in the long term reliability department. Have the initial teething problems been addressed by Aprilia? Have owners been able to achieve consistent performance over long periods of time, or do the same problems continue to plague the scooter? Moreover, the availability of spare parts and the quality of after sales service, which were previously the main issues of concern, are also important to measure the overall reliability and ownership of the scooter.
I have had my SXR for 3 years now and it has been rock solid. Later production runs seem to have ironed out the initial issues. Nothing major, just run of the mill maintenance.
Parts availability is still a nightmare, but reliability has improved. It took two months with a replacement headlight assembly. It's a great scooter when it's working, but if anything goes wrong, get ready to wait a long time.
So far, my 2023 model is trouble free. I believe Aprilia listened to the early feedback and improved. It feels solid, and I haven’t had any of the electrical gremlins I’ve heard about on earlier models.
Mine is still a problem. Occasionally the digital display glitches and I have recurring problems with the fuel pump. These are hit or miss with Aprilia service. I would not buy it again.
It's a mixed bag. My 2024 model has had the engine and transmission bulletproof, but small annoying issues like loose panels and a faulty side stand sensor. Not major things, but not what you get at this price point.
It has definitely improved with reliability. I have a brother who bought one at launch and had tons of issues. My wife got hers last year and it’s been smooth sailing. It looks like Aprilia has worked out the bugs.
The scooter itself has been reliable for me but Aprilia service is still a pain. It's long waits, inexperienced mechanics and poor communication. The product has actually gotten better, but the experience of owning it still isn’t there.
Mine has 30,000 km on it in two years with no major issues. Regular maintenance is key. A lot of the reported problems, I think, are a result of people not following the service schedule correctly.
It’s better, but not quite as good as Japanese reliability. Nothing major, just a few minor electrical issues here and there, but nothing that left me stranded. Parts availability has improved the most since launch, it’s much better now.
I work as a mechanic on these and they have definitely improved. With newer models, we see far fewer issues. They are still more complex than your average scooter, and so proper maintenance is still a requirement.
