The Toyota HiAce; is it really as bulletproof as people say?
Toyota HiAce is renowned for being extremely reliable and long lived, with many owners getting many hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the clock without any major problems. But some skeptics say that reputation might be exaggerated or based on older models. Whether newer HiAce vans have the same level of durability of old as there are more electrics involved is still debated. In addition, make and model notwithstanding, there’s a lot you can do to boost a vehicle’s mileage (or longevity), and a lot you can do that can diminish the life of a vehicle. Some users claim that the HiAce can handle rough conditions and heavy use, while others say that it’s no worse than other well cared for vans. Van enthusiasts and potential buyers are hotly debating whether the HiAce really deserves its 'bulletproof' status.
Absolutely! I’ve had my HiAce over 10 years now at 500,000 km and it’s still going strong. They build these things like tanks.
It's invincible, but only good. My mine needed a new transmission at 300,000 km. It’s still impressive, but not exactly bulletproof.
The older models were tanks, as the newer ones aren't quite as robust. They're not to the same extreme, but they're still reliable.
I think it depends on the way you treat it. I’m religious about maintenance, mine has been bulletproof. Any vehicle you neglect, will let you down.
Bulletproof? No. Very reliable? Yes. They exaggerate, but they are actually genuinely solid vans if you look after them.
I'm a mechanic and as such I can attest that HiAces are one of the most reliable vans I work on. They’re not immune to problems, particularly if they are neglected.
My experience has been mixed. Good engine, but it has had electrical gremlins that were a huge PITA to get rid of.
