Should you buy a used XUV500 in 2024 or buy a new model from another brand?

XUV500 has been discontinued and new models like XUV700 has come up, many potential buyers are looking at used XUV500s as a more affordable option. I just picked up a 2018 XUV500 and I think it is a great value. For the money, you get a lot of car, it's spacious, powerful and it's loaded with features. It's not the newest thing on the block, but that's exactly what you want if you want a big, comfortable SUV without having to pay a fortune. So just make sure to get one with a good service history.

I’m confused as I am considering both used XUV500 and newer compact SUVs. With more space and power, the XUV500, lacks the newer features and better fuel efficiency of newer cars, such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The XUV500 is still a good car, if you don’t mind slightly older tech and you need the space.

In 2024, I'd be quite cautious about buying a used XUV500. It’s still a capable SUV, but you may be left without parts down the line. Also, you’re not getting the latest safety features and tech. If you can push your budget a little, a newer model such as the XUV700 or even the base variant of the Tata Safari might be a better long term investment.

I’d say the XUV500 still has its place, having owned both a new compact SUV and a used XUV500. For the money, nothing can beat it for space and road presence. But you should expect to pay more for running costs and possibly more maintenance. If you spend a lot of time on the highway with family it's worth considering. A newer, smaller SUV may not be worth considering, mainly because it is capable of being used in the city.

I see a lot of XUV500s come into the shop as a mechanic. They’re robust, in general, but like any used car you can run into problems. Suspension wear and electrical niggles are common problems. For people who know a thing or two about cars or are prepared to spend on maintenance, a well maintained XUV500 can be a good buy. And just make sure you get it checked out thoroughly before you buy.
