On the long distance touring front, how does the Discover 125T Disc stack up against purpose built tourers?

While mostly a commuter motorcycle, some Discover 125T Disc owners have used it for longer rides. It's triggered debates as to its suitability for touring. It's not designed as a tourer, but it's comfy enough to sit in and its fuel economy is decent enough for budget conscious travelers. But it lacks such features of a dedicated touring bike as a big fuel tank, protection from the wind, and luggage space. A few riders argue that with some modifications — such as a windscreen and luggage rack — the Discover can make a capable tourer. Others say that given its limited power output and basic suspension it is not fit for covering long stretches on the highway. It is often discussed in terms of cost, comfort and capability trade-offs that those who are thinking of using the Discover 125T Disc for more than just daily commutes have to make.

The Discover was surprisingly comfortable, I've done a 500km trip on it. It's no Gold Wing, but for the money it's a reasonable tourer.

Are you kidding? This wasn't a touring bike. You'll be miserable after 100km. Just do city rides and short trips.

It's all about expectations. If you don't mind a slower pace and more stops, the Discover can do the tours. Just don't expect luxury.

Mine had a small windscreen and soft luggage added. Now it is my weekend tourer and does the job. The journey is what it’s all about, not the bike.

Tried touring on mine once. Never again. On highways, there was lack of power, and on bad roads, the suspension was basic – a nightmare.

If you’re on a budget, it’s actually not bad for touring. It’s good on fuel efficiency, meaning fewer stops, and an upright position is comfy for hours.

For short tours (200-300km) I'd say it's fine. After that, you’ll wish you had a bike more tour oriented.

The trick is to pack light and wisely plan your route. The Discover can be a fun tourer, avoid highways, stick to scenic backroads.
