Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?

It's the Land Cruiser and it's been known to be as rugged, simple, and easy to fix in the remotest of locales. But the 300 series brings with it a load of new tech, plus advanced driver assistance systems, a more complex infotainment system and electronic off road aids. In many circumstances these features increase comfort and capability, but they also compound complexity to the vehicle. The situation has sparked debate over how the new tech undermines the Land Cruiser’s famed reliability and the fact it’s easy to fix out in the field. They come from some believing that the added features make the car more capable and more safe, to others worried that it makes it more prone to problems and harder to repair without specialised equipment.

The new tech certainly makes it a lot more capable off road. Looking to things like the multi terrain select and crawl control when your in sticky situations.

I think they've gone too far. The simplicity was part of the Land Cruiser’s appeal. It's now another over complicated luxury SUV that would be an absolute nightmare to fix in the middle of nowhere.

It's a balancing act. I don't worry very much about long term reliability, but the tech adds a lot of convenience and safety features. Toyota, at least, has a good record with electronics.

It is still basically pretty straightforward mechanics. The new tech is all add-ons that you can just bypass if you need. They just made it so not possible to work on.

At least they are modernizing. That meant the Land Cruiser had to change. But if that core off road ability is there, I'm all for the new stuff.

I like the tech, but I wish they'd built it more modular. Let us have the ability to add or subtract from these optional features, as needed. Not everyone needs and wants all the bells and whistles.

I'm torn. If the new tech makes this appeal to a wider audience, hopefully one that will keep Toyota making the Land Cruiser. Noticeably, it’s straying a bit from its roots.
