Is the YZF R125 just a city bike or can it take on long distance rides?

The Yamaha YZF-R125 is commonly praised for its agility and gasoline thriftiness in city driving, and looks to be a popular choice for commuters and town riders. But there is still some debate over its ability to go further. Some riders say its small engine size and sporty ergonomics make it an unsuitable companion for extended highway trips, while others say they've managed multi day tours on their R125. Long distance riding factors in wind protection, seat comfort and fuel range. But there’s also the question of whether the bike performs at high speeds enough for safe overtaking on highways. I’m going to look at some different ways of using the YZF R125 for more than just short city hops.

It's all about mindset. Is it the perfect long distance bike? No. If you’re determined, can you make it work? Absolutely. People have toured on scooters so an R125 is most definitely capable if you're brave enough.

I think it depends on the rider. It may be more capable on long rides if you’re smaller and lighter. If you're a bigger person, however, you'll probably feel cramped and underpowered pretty quickly.

It can take long rides, but you need to adjust the expectation. It's not going to be as easy of a touring bike, but with some planning and patience, then you can certainly take it on adventures.

Long distance on a 125? No way. To maintain highway speeds, you'll wring its neck. It's just a city bike. Beyond that is just torturing yourself and the poor little engine.

I have done a 300 mile round trip on my R125 and although it wasn't the most comfortable ride ever, it was absolutely doable. If you can’t keep up with the bigger bikes on the highway, just plan for more frequent stops.
