Is the Thar too impractical for most buyers?
Well, this is the Mahindra Thar which has been popular with its rugged looks and more off road capabilities, but one thing that people are unhappy about the Mahindra Thar is its lack of practicality in day to day use. The biggest downsides include the vehicle's limited seating capacity (latest model has four seats only), small boot space and bad ingress/egress especially on rear passengers. Besides, the Thar is also less fuel efficient than other SUVs in its price range and is often called out for its compromised on road comfort. All these have made many potential buyers ask whether the Thar can be a family car. But while these trade offs are common to any vehicle, Thar enthusiasts claim they are willing to compromise so long as the vehicle maintains its character and capabilities. This debate has certainly brought forth a conversation about the trade off between lifestyle and practicality when buying a vehicle.
For sure, lack of practicality is a deal breaker for me. I need a car that can fit my family and hold groceries. The Thar just doesn't work for daily use.
The Thar isn't about practicality, I don't think. For enthusiasts who want something different, it’s a lifestyle vehicle. This is not the car you are looking for if you want practicality.
I can say, as a Thar owner, that the practicality issues are overblown. It’s not hatchback convenient, but it’s not impossible to live with. All you need to do is adjust your expectations.
What makes the Thar impractical is also part of its charm. It’s not designed to be a family hauler or grocery getter. This is for the people who want adventure and don't mind losing a little convenience.
The practicality issue, I think, is really going to come down to your lifestyle. The Thar can work as a daily driver if you are single or have a small family and don't have to haul a lot of stuff. That’s life, it’s all about your priorities.
The problem is that they are not practical enough, but not everyone sees it as a deal breaker. There are people who buy the Thar as a second car to use for the weekends and for off roading, while other more practical cars for day to day use.
I was turned off by the impracticality of the Thar, but, on test drive, I fell in love. There are times when the experience of driving trumps practicality.
